MARC CHAGALL, LE CIRQUE, M. 495

Marc Chagall had a special place in his heart for the circus since his childhood Vollard commissioned Chagall to paint a series of gouaches on the theme of the circus with the idea of eventually publishing them into a series of lithographs. The gouaches were realized but because of the early death of Vollard and then World War II, the print project was shelved indefinitely. After the war, when Chagall returned to Paris, his close friend and publisher Teriade renewed the project and in 1967 published, Le Cirque, a portfolio of 38 delightful lithographs illustrating the story of the circus as imagined by Marc Chagall himself.
